Our Legacy

From 1963-1967, the Franklin D. Roosevelt High School Mustang Band participated in the highly regarded Prairie View Interscholastic League at Prairie View A&M University. The PVIL was the governing body for academic, athletic, and music competitions for black high schools in Texas during the state’s segregationist era.

Throughout the 60 years of the Franklin D. Roosevelt High School Mustang Band, the Mustang Band has been recognized as one of the premier bands in the nation. The many achievements that the band and individual band members obtained through the pursuit of excellence and fortitude was etched into our hearts and minds by our great Director of Bands that we can succeed!

From the inception of Franklin D. Roosevelt High School in 1963, the Franklin D. Roosevelt High School Mustang Band program was the heartbeat of the school. From which the sound of music would flow and circulate from the basement band room to and throughout the halls and corridors of the school. The Musicianship of Excellence was the defining expectation of each of our Director of Bands

To be a great band requires great leaders. The Alumni Drum Major and Drum Majorettes of the Franklin D. Roosevelt High School Mustang Band were true leaders that exemplified discipline, excellent musicianship, respect and complete command of the band. True Dedication and Devotion to making the FDR Mustang Band a great band!

A Majorette of the Franklin D. Roosevelt High School Mustang Band was about more than twirling a baton or executing a precise dance routine. While all that took training and preparation,  simultaneously, majorettes were developing strong leadership abilities, discipline, interpersonal skills and strategic thinking.
